Highlights from 2022

In this month’s newsletter, we’re sharing 12 of our highlights from 2022, as we reflect on the year. These are presented in chronological order starting with January 2022.

Thank you to all of our partners, funders, and supporters for making these achievements possible! We look forward to working with you in 2023 as we continue in our mission of closing the financing gap for NCDs.

HFI hosted a breakfast event at the 75th World Health Assembly, entitled “Global Health Financing: Creating Solidarity, Managing Sustainability, & Closing the Gap.” We were joined by remarkable health finance leaders that discussed pandemic and NCD financing impasses, potential innovative finance and blended finance pathways to achieve better finance, health, economic return on investment, and collaborative actions that the global health community can take to achieve SDG 3.

5. HFI Rallies with Others to Institute Change in Davos, Geneva, and Beyond

In May, HFI was represented in Geneva and Davos, Switzerland during the 75th World Health Assembly (WHA). As multiple events were held in these locations, HFI was a prominent player at the World Heart Summit (WHS) and World Economic Forum (WEF).

6. HFI CEO at the Launch of the Access to Oncology Medicines (ATOM) Coalition

The Access to Oncology Medicines (ATOM) Coalition aims to help low- and lower-middle-income countries access more essential cancer medicines. The Coalition launched on May 22 with HFI as a partner organization. HFI CEO Dr. Andrea Feigl spoke at the launch event.

7. Presentation at Sanofi Global Health Unit

In July, Dr. Feigl spoke at Sanofi’s Global Health Unit in Paris on Building Holistic and Resilient Health Systems to Manage Non-Communicable Diseases. Panelists conveyed the importance of unmet needs in healthcare and healthcare access for those with cardio metabolic conditions, diabetes, and cancer in LMICs. Dr. Feigl addressed how institutions and governments need to invest in chronic care systems to tackle supply chain barriers to NCD medicines and products and understand the pipeline of cash flow in public and private sectors.
8. Continuing to Combat Type 1 Diabetes in Mexico

Throughout the year, HFI continued collaborating with the leadership in Jalisco, Mexico, as well as other partners, to support the rollout of “La Salud Como un Derecho, y no un Privilegio" (Health as a Right, and not a Privilege). This initiative aims to provide education, access, and support for children living with Type 1 Diabetes. Children in these areas lack sustained access to appropriate insulin and related glucose measurement devices.

Jalisco State and HFI are leading the Devices for Development Consortium (D4DC), a global consortium bringing together the private and public sectors for a volume guarantee mechanism to improve access to glucose monitoring devices, medicines, education, and care.

9. Supporting the Vaccine Supply Chain in Kenya

HFI partnered with IPE Global on a United States Agency for an International Development (USAID) project to understand the challenges in the vaccine supply chain in Africa and assess opportunities for a financially viable and operationally practical blended finance facility. The HFI team visited Nairobi to gather data to develop a comprehensive roadmap for using blended finance instruments to support the COVID-19 vaccine supply chain in Kenya.  The team also explored opportunities for public and private partnerships and investments to address the overall healthcare supply chain in Kenya.

10. HFI and Health Wildcatters Are Supporting Aptus.Life

HFI and Health Wildcatters are partnering to support Aptus.Life, a healthcare startup that was mutually selected by both organizations. The organization is incentivizing providers and persons with chronic disease to manage their conditions, driving the double bottom line of both better health and better economic outcomes.
